welcome thank you for joining us for an introduction to the AKC s Equity Council in the fall of 2019 the New Mexico public education department asked all public school dist charter schools to create an equity Council the equity Council was expected to consider the academic social and emotional needs of English language Learners Native American student students with disabilities and low-income students and make sure they received the necessary instruction and support to succeed academically at the same level as that as students who are not members of one of these groups dakcs Equity Council made up of parents staff and community members first met in jail Arias 2020 its current members include the following hi hello my name is Jody mache I am Laguna Pueblo today I-10 at the University of Arizona my home communities care since 2011. my name is Karen Butchart I'm a retired educator having work for 35 first for the Albuquerque Public Schools as a teacher reading specialist District administrator and Elementary School principal all of the schools with which I worked at high numbers of English language Learners Native American students Jesus with disabilities and low-income students throughout my career I saw that many of these students were smart capable and hardworking but we're not succeeding at academically because their specific needs had not been identified and the rest that experience led me to a strong commitment to ensure that these students were exposed to policies curricula instructional programs and whatever supports for necessary to allow them to reach their full potential hello my name is Roberto Shanae I have work for most of a long career in the field of mediation I am responding for a New Mexico I have always been are but I have work nationally and internationally I have focused on my work in the realm of Intercultural Community Building I've come to understand deeply that the human beings can live together bonded by their commonalities and Beth need not be polarized by their differences to ensure that our combined however prevail takes work and often requires new initiatives to ensure that those commonalities are strengthen the council is committed to ensuring those was mentioned by turn in another's that's to Natori English language Learners Native American students and students with disability and low-income students repeat as well as other students and that their unique qualities not older than a demon to their achievements establishment of every requires that schools look closely at any conditions that they that may constitute a barrier to the success of all students I have a long- application when I was asking so I understand how come it at the school is to the success of every student I joined the council to work with others to strengthen and hat and enhance that's very commitment my name is Kristi Collins and I am the head administrator of Alice King Community School this is my 22nd year and education for the first 10 years of my career I was a teacher and parent liaison at a Title 1 school I moved to Alice King in 2010 and taught in a special education inclusion program for six years prior to becoming a school administrator I have experience working with students who are economically disadvantaged didn't have disabilities English language Learners and Native American students I strongly believe that students must feel safe in order to learn it is important that students individual needs including their basic needs as well as their social emotional needs Bridge rest so that each student is healthy engaged and supported at school this whole child approach to education is one that promotes equity and inclusion for all students my name is Anna and then it the assistant principal at Alice King Community School I am currently in my 27th year of Education I have worked in rural and urban school districts public-private and now my first charter school with a KCs wow time has flown my career began as a special education teacher I always knew I wanted to serve students who face challenges with learning but with the proper support and encouragement can reach all goals one area that has specialized in its into flexia and this is Matic instruction needed to break the code of reading it has been amazing to help so many students overcome challenges with reading in 2009 I completed my educational leadership degree it was time to use my knowledge and experience to service School leader or I can make a larger difference in the lives of students parents and stuff I started a KCs in 2019 and I've really enjoyed our Charter School environment where we meet her students where they are academically socially an emotionally our community is an amazing place with dedicated staff supportive parents and wonderful students it is a Hidden Gem in the educational realm thank you my name is Laurel Nesbitt I'm in Ernie and the parent of a student with autism spectrum disorder who is a former Alice King student who attended from kindergarten all the way through 8th grade and is now in 10th grade in my work as an attorney both in private practice formerly and in my present position as senior attorney with disability rights New Mexico I advocate for the rights of students with disabilities in schools I have also volunteered my time both during law school and throughout my years of practice addressing the legal problems of economically disadvantaged individuals especially those experiencing homelessness my current work at disability rights New Mexico consists of advocacy for individual students and their families as well systemic work to improve the delivery of special education and related services in New Mexico schools I am deeply committed to the belief that was appropriate educational programs and support including among other things strong academic no call necessary accommodation the modifications comprehensive behavioral support and diligent for post-secondary transition planning and services students with disabilities enjoy success in school and in wise after school in further education or employment I have strong admiration for my fellow Equity council members learning from them during every meeting and I'm energized by our discussions about how to create greater inclusion and improved outcomes underserved students at Alice King one of the first activities of the AKC s Equity Council was to develop a definition of equity that would direct the future work of the council the equity council's working definition is as follows Equity is providing fair and impartial access to education eliminating barriers and discriminatory practices uniformity and opportunities in ensuring necessary support for all students regardless of gender race and seek origin family background ability or economic status all this while maintaining end of will Student Activity rather student identity in May 2020 they are kcsi buddy console with input from some staff members completed the required Readiness assessment and submitted it the New Mexico public education department the Readiness assessment addresses three of the target groups English language Learners Native American students and students with disabilities and it includes statements practices for each to complete the Readiness assessment we were asked to assess what we consider to be the school's current level of performance for each statement we have started to analyze the responses to the Readiness assessment reviewing the responses will help the equity Council identify areas of strength and areas for growth and creating an equitable learning experience for all this is for all students and their families in March 2021 teacher administrator and parent members of the equity Council completed an initial response to the culturally and linguistically responsive or CLR framework inventory I meant the New Mexico public education department also requires councils to complete the CLR framework inventory asked the council to identify the schools underserved populations and the desired outcome for these students families the desired outcomes these two families have for them determine the evidence needed to show the school is achieving its Mission develop a plan that will result in gradual progress for the desired outcome are the schools underserved populations and explain how the school will continue to address the needs of the underserved students after the initial steps of the plan are implemented although we have had some general discussion about these does the group we have much more work to do to fully complete the inventory and create the seal our framework ultimately the equity Council will develop a seal or plan that ensures that all call Alice King students are engaged in a cup delete and linguistically responsive education that meets their academic social and emotional needs in May 2021 the AKC s Equity Council presented the Alice King governing Council an overview of purpose membership work to date and preliminary suggestions for targeted Improvement inequitable practices for the school since that time we have been invited to report on the equity Council current activities at each governor council meeting Security Council believes it is important to Gabe gather information about how successful Alice King isn't showing equity in its attitudes and practices for more than just as council members and from completing Assessments in order to do this we developed a parrot family Equity survey in May 2021 and invited parents and families to completed even though the information gathered meaningful and helpful unfortunately only a few families responded to the survey therefore we are asking parents and families again to complete the AKC s Equity survey we know you have many demands on your time but we sincerely hope you will complete the survey even if you were only able to respond to the multiple-choice portion of each question of course if your schedule allows the extra information you can provide by giving examples of what the school does well or can improve upon is also very helpful please turn in your completed survey no later than November 30th 2021 Equity service and or budget 70% directions to the Monterey you're doing whatever was necessary your feedback on the work of the equity account now and in the future is invaluable to us the viewpoints presented at meetings are limited to those of the current members on the council we recognize there may be many more perspectives that can be off as we consider very important issues that affect your child's educational experience and the school's policies and budget for that reason we are much in need of your support and participation one way you can support the work of the council and participate in two patients that are made is by completing the equity survey in addition please feel free to contact any Equity council member if you have questions concerns or suggestions about the effort to ensure that Equitable attitudes practices are present in every aspect of the educational experiences offered at Alice King your views and opinions will be appreciate it and consider as we complete the work of the equity accounts furthermore we need a greater number of voices and viewpoints in our Council
