Dear AKCS Community,
The New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) recently released guidance for school districts and charter schools to begin the work of addressing the areas outlined in the Martinez/Yazzie consolidated lawsuit. The Court's decision held that New Mexico has not met its duty to provide an education to the state's "at-risk" students, including those who are economically disadvantaged, Native American, English learners, or students with disabilities.
As part of the NMPED's strategy to address the lawsuit, NMPED is requiring all districts and charter schools to establish an “Equity Council". This council will be comprised of community members, school personnel, students, and parents and include representation of the four student groups named in the court’s ruling. Selected Equity Council members will be involved in doing a needs assessment and making recommendations for programs, policy and funding to serve the four student groups identified in the lawsuit.
If you are interested in serving on the AKCS Equity Council, please fill out the electronic application that can be found by clicking the link below.
